Cameroon High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Salaheddine Abbas Ibrahima and the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Geoffrey Onyeama met last week to discuss the construction of a transborder bridge over the Cross River.
They did not provide further details.
Cameroon and Nigeria recently issued a joint call for tenders to recruit an independent consultant to design a border bridge between Mfum (Nigerian side) and Ekok (Cameroonian side), over the Bamenda-Mamfe-Ekok (203 km) in Cameroon and Enugu-Abakaliki-Mfum (238 km) in Nigeria corridor, according to Business in Cameroon.
Cross River is the main river in southeastern Nigeria and gives its name to Cross River State. It originates in Cameroon, where it takes the name of the Manyu River.
The Cross River forms a boundary between two tropical moist forest ecoregions: the Cross-Niger transition forests, which lie west of the river between the Cross and Niger Rivers, and the Cross-Sanaga-Bioko coastal forests, which lie to the east between the Cross River and the Sanaga River of Cameroon.
The region concerned by this project has potential resources with regard to cash crops, forestry, and fishery resources, mines, as well as tourism resources. However, the development of these resources and the development of the region are essentially hampered by the current poor traffic conditions and high rainfall, around 3,400 mm per year in Mamfe and 2,000 mm / year in the Batibo area, according to CEMAC ECO FINANCE.
